Combustion Elements and Combustion Speeds

We have already mentioned that in order for the concept of “fire“, which is defined as “a great fire causing harm”, there are 3 necessary components (Combustible Material – Heat – Oxygen).These 3 components required for the combustion action also determine the speed of the combustion element with their intensity and amount.”Combustion”, which occurs when the combustible material meets with heat and oxygen, is divided into 4 categories according to the amount of 3 components required for combustion and the relevant combustion speed.

These are;

  • Slow Combustion,
  • Rapid Combustion,
  • Flash and Explosion Combustion,
  • Spontaneous Combustion,

Slow Combustion

Combustion speed type where heat, light, flame, glow  is not observed. At this combustion speed, due to the lack of heat or oxygen during combustion, no glow, flammable vapour or gas is produced.Therefore, the combustible substance reacts quite slowly.The best example of this type of combustion is oxidation. Corrosion, which is the degradation metals such as copper and iron in wet, damp, humid or acidic environments, is actually a chemical combustion. During this combustion, neither flammable vapour or gas is produced, nor is there any glow on the metal.

Rapid Combustion

Unlike slow combustion, it is a kind of combustion that occurs with flaming combustion, glow, flammable vapour and gas.In rapid combustion, all signs of combustion occur and flames are generated by the combustion gases or flammable vapours.Glow, which is the final stage of combustion, is also included in this category, as a result of the combustion of solid combustible materials (Class A Solid Flammable Fires).

Flash and Explosion Combustion

It is a category of fast and easy flammable substances. However, it should be noted that Flash and Explosion are different reactions. Flash; It is the combustion of flammable substances in an environment where there is sufficient air, even with a small spark. Inflammable materials are highly flammable, burn rapidly and are very difficult to extinguish.Explosion; It is the energy produced by the release of gases caused by the rising of the heat to a sufficient level and the rapid volume increase after this release.The size and effect of the explosion is very effective in the type, size and shape of the combustible material.

Spontaneous Combustion

It is the kind of combustion speed type that results from the acceleration of a slow combustion over time.In fact, this process can be considered as a continuation of the slow combustion process.However, as a result of inflammation, it forms a separate category.What is important here is the structural property of the combustible material.Spontaneous Combustion is observed as a result of oxidation of oily substances (especially oily substances of vegetable origin).The process that starts with the oxidation of oily surfaces as a result of contact with air can turn into ignition and flammability with this heat increase.

Fire Detection Systems

All combustion speeds, regardless of speed, can result in material and vital losses at the end of the process.For this reason, the sooner the fire and combustion situation is intervened, the less losses are sustained in the process.As Section Electronic Security Systems, we provide Fire Detection Systems and Fire Alarm Systems services in order to overcome this process with zero loss, and provide the technical infrastructure to our customers completely for early detection and intervention.
